Milton rental-heating context
Milton requires at least 20°C in rental housing during its heating period.
Milton's Property Standards By-law requires heat to be provided and maintained at a minimum of 20°C from September 1 through June 15 in habitable areas and other spaces intended for normal tenant use, subject to the provisions of the by-law.
The by-law also requires residential complexes to have heating equipment capable of maintaining the required temperature and, except in an emergency, prohibits portable heating equipment from serving as the primary source of heat in an occupied building. For electrically heated rental properties, properly specified permanent baseboard heating can therefore be part of ongoing maintenance and replacement work.

120 V or 240/208 V? Match the heater to the project.
Voltage must match the electrical design and circuit serving the heater. When replacing an existing baseboard or planning a new installation, confirm voltage, wattage, circuit capacity and installation conditions before ordering.

Additional residential units in Milton
Milton ARU and basement projects require permits, registration and proper heating design.
Milton defines additional residential units (ARUs) as self-contained dwelling units on a property containing a detached house, semi-detached house or townhouse. In Milton's urban area, up to four residential units in total are permitted on a residential lot with municipal water and sewage services, subject to applicable zoning and building requirements.
A building permit is required to construct an ARU, and Milton established an ARU registration program on April 1, 2025 for new and existing units. The Town's basement-apartment guidance also requires a building permit before work begins and identifies inspections that can include heating rough-in and final heating. If electric baseboard heating forms part of the approved project design, confirm voltage, wattage, circuit capacity and calculated heating requirements before ordering.
Milton ARU considerations
- Confirm zoning and property eligibility
- Obtain the required building permit
- Prepare required plans and construction details
- Complete required building and heating inspections
- Register the ARU with the Town where required
- Match heater voltage and wattage to the approved electrical and heating design
